Storytelling

In January 2012, with financial support from ConocoPhillips, Alaska Future Educators of Alaska inaugurated a Digital Storytelling Series focused on Alaska Native educators. The series aimed to gain insight into the value and worth of being an educator by interviewing Alaska Native educators and Elders in the Far North. Two districts were selected — the Bering Strait School District and the North Slope Borough School District — and after discussions with FEA Coordinators and Superintendents six sites were invited to participate.

The six FEA Clubs then worked with Lead Teaching Artist, Katie Basile, and Technology Specialists Patrick Cutler, Linda Frink and Erin Kavanaugh, to create digital stories featuring local Alaska Native educators and Elders.

Each of the gracious interviewees shared stories of both traditional and contemporary education, along with their experiences in the classroom, as educators and students.

We encourage you to explore the rich world of digital media and storytelling. More importantly we encourage you to initiate a dialogue between FEA students and the Elders and educators in your community. It is through these stories and the sharing of experiences that we will reach our goal of inspiring Alaskan youth to pursue careers in education.
